The UK Government made it compulsory for all international arrivals to the UK to take a COVID-19 PCR test on or before Day 2 of a 10-day quarantine period, followed by a second test on or after Day 8.
The day you arrive in the UK is Day 0.
Every test kit includes clear instructions and labels to return the sample using the Royal Mail Tracked 24 Returns COVID-19 service. Samples may be returned using any of the 32,000 convenient Royal Mail Priority Postboxes, as shown on the Royal Mail services near you page. Just click “Show my nearest priority postboxes” before you search.
This service aims to deliver the next day (excluding Sunday).
Typically, the lab will send you the results within 24 hours of receiving the sample but it can take a maximum of 48 hours.
The official results certificate is emailed to you directly from the lab as soon as it is available.
If you test positive for Covid-19, you are required to self-isolate for 10 days from the day of your test date. The 10 day self-isolation will apply to everyone living and/or travelling with you. This quarantine period is mandatory regardless of symptoms being present or not.
If your Day 2 test result is positive, your sample may be subject to genome sequencing in order to discern any Covid-19 variants. This preventive measure aims to stop new variants from entering the UK.
Further advice will be provided with your test results.
As per government guidelines: If you have been in a country or territory on the amber list in the 10 days before you arrive in England you must quarantine for 10 days on arrival. Under the Test to Release scheme you can choose to pay for a private COVID-19 test on day 5. If the result is negative (and the result of your day 2 test result was negative or inconclusive) you can end your quarantine.
You cannot take your Test to Release test until you have been in England for 5 full days.
The scheme is voluntary and applies to those quarantining in England only.
If you do not want to opt into the Test to Release scheme, you will need to quarantine for 10 days.
You cannot take part in the scheme if you have been in or through a country or territory on the red list in the 10 days before you arrive in England. If the result for your day 5 test is negative (and the result of your day 2 test result was negative or inconclusive) you can stop quarantine as soon as you receive the result. You still need to take the compulsory test on or after day 8.
Your sample will only be shared with our partner lab. Test results (positive or negative) will be reported to Public Health England (PHE) in accordance with UK regulations.
